Annual Women's Lunch Debate

This year's debate was held on Thursday 21st January 2010.
The event was supported by PricewaterhouseCoopers and was held at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

In her speech at the Wellbeing of Women Annual Lunch Debate, the charity’s patron, prime-minister’s wife Sarah Brown, emphasised how fantastic our NHS services are, but also made the point that they would not be so good without the work of independent charities, like WoW, funding research to find solutions to problems, like gynaecological cancers. Professor John Shepherd reiterated this in his talk to the 200 influential women attending the lunch, and in the table debate that followed it was clear that many in the audience were in agreement with both speakers.

The outcome of the debate was:

  • HRT should be an individual decision for each woman being well informed about the relative risks
  • All daughters should be encouraged to have the HPV vaccine
  • "Are our cancer services what we should expect" revealed that whilst most thought that the NHS was excellent at dealing with those suffering from cancer, more medical research needed to be done for better treatment and prevention and there should be more education and awareness so women could keep themselves well.

We are very grateful to PricewaterhouseCoopers for their support of this event.
