                  2004 Grants

                  Grants Awarded in 2004

                  For 2004, Wellbeing of Women has awarded a total of £251,225 to research into the better health of women and their babies. This includes a research training fellowship and a major clinical trial. For further details on each project, please click on the title.


                  Research Training Fellowship
                  The regulation of cyclo-oxygenase type 2 (Cox-2) expression by mechanical stretch in human amnion. Dr Aarthi Mohan, Imperial College London, £96,648 over 2 years.

                  Clinical Trial
                  Randomised placebo controlled trial of outpatient cervical ripening with isosorbide mononitrate (IMN) prior to induction of labour - clinical trial with analyses of efficacy, cost effectiveness and acceptability. Dr Jane Norman, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, £149,577 over 3 years.

                  NBTF Elective Bursaries
                  Eloise Helme, University of Bristol, was awarded £1,000 for a medical elective to spend two months studying perinatal medicine in Tonga and Sydney. Her project looks at the factors influencing a mother's decision to breastfeed or not.

                  Mary McCauley, University of Aberdeen, was awarded £1,000 for a medical elective to spend two months at the Tiruvalla Medical Mission Hospital, Kerala, India. Her project will look at the incidence and role of low birth weight in neonatal mortality.

                  Sarah New, Bournemouth University, was awarded £1,000 for a midwifery elective to spend three months in Sweden to gain a wider insight into the role of the midwife as a whole in Sweden, and to observe any different aspects of care that occur compared to the UK.
