                  2008 Grants

                  Grants Awarded in 2008

                  For 2008, Wellbeing of Women awarded a total of £996,751 for research into the better health of women and their babies. This includes 5 new research grants, 2 research training fellowships, 4 entry-level research scholarships and £27,000 to Student Elective Bursaries.


                  Research Grants: Wellbeing of Women received 55 applications for the 2008 grant round. Five research grants totalling £628,306 were awarded in the areas of pregnancy and birth, gynaecological cancer and quality of life. £115,000 was funded from National Birthday Trust funds.

                  Aberrant prokineticin expression as a cause for ectopic pregnancy: the effects of Chlamydia trachomatis infection and smoking. Dr Andrew Horne, Dr Henry Jabbour and Dr Gary Entrican, University of Edinburgh and Moredun Research Institute £128,445 over 24 months. This award was part funded by the National Birthday Trust Fund.

                  Investigation of the role of intrauterine interleukin 8 and interleukin 6 in normal early pregnancy and sporadic miscarriage. Dr Judith Bulmer and Dr Gendie Lash, Newcastle University £101,696 over 36 months.  This award was part funded by the National Birthday Trust Fund.

                   Research Training Fellowships
                  We received 14 applications for Research Training Fellowships. Five applicants were interviewed by members of our Research Advisory Committee in June, and two awards were made.

                  Thirteen applications were received in this grant round for Entry Level Scholarships, and four grants were awarded.

                  Dr Kulvir Hundal at the University of Oxford was awarded £10,770 for his project Changes in the Th1/Th2 immune bias in T, NK and NKT cells throughout the menstrual cycle - potential markers of implantation failure?

                  Dr Ioannis Gallos at Birmingham Women’s Hospital NHS Trust was awarded £17,500 for his project Clinical, morphological and biomarker investigation of endometrial hyperplasia before and following treatment with Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS).

                  Medical and Midwifery Student Elective Bursaries 2008
                  140 applications were received and 27 bursaries have been awarded.
