On 11 March we launched a unique project to save mothers' and babies' lives.
The Baby Bio Bank is set to revolutionise research into pregnancy complications, based on investigating how far these are inherited. The project is being headed up by Professor Lesley Regan, internationally acclaimed obstetrician and gynaecologist and recurrent miscarriage expert and Professor Gudrun Moore, genetics specialist in pregnancy complications and intrauterine growth restriction.
For the first time, medical history and blood samples, will be taken from both parents, together with cord blood and placenta samples after the baby is born.
Key to its success will be the midwives, who will be recruited over the next six weeks, and it is expected that the first samples will be taken in early June. The collection may take up to five years, faster if more funding is raised. Through this research we should be able to detect which mothers and babies may be at risk.
"The possibilities are enormous. It's extremely exciting. It will be an international resource for obstetricians and scientists." Professor Lesley Regan
The launch of the project has been made possible by funds raised through the Lord Mayor's Appeal in 2008. At a VIP reception on 11th March we thanked Sir David Lewis for choosing us for his appeal. Sir David unveiled the honours board listing the major donors and supporters of the Appeal.
We also launched our Wall Puzzle (pictured above with Sarah Brown our Patron and Professors Lesley Regan and Gudrun Moore). Donors can buy a piece of a big jigsaw for a minimum donation of £500. They can choose the number of their piece and their name is recorded on the Roll of Honour next to the puzzle. Each piece of the puzzle brings us a step closer to a better understanding of pregnancy and its complications.
If you would like to support this project, either by buying a piece of the puzzle or through other fundraising please contact Deborah or Liz in the WoW office on 020 7772 6400 or email wellbeingofwomen@rcog.org.uk putting Baby Bio Bank in the subject header.
