Judy Murray: The Power Behind her Champion Sons

Sparkling lunch sponsored by Accenture and Julius Baer

Judy Murray joined us for lunch yesterday at the Bluebird Chelsea to chat to Eve Pollard about her life as a coach, Strictly star and mum to Grand Slam winners Andy and Jamie.

The Tennis Super Mum served up wonderful stories from her journey from the soggy community courts of her hometown in Dunblane to Wimbledon’s Centre Court and guests were treated to insights into raising champion children.

I am a massive believer in the power of women coming together for a common cause

Judy Murray was an impressive and entertaining speaker, whose drive and determination is an inspiration to us all. Her amusing tales of trading childcare for tennis lessons, how she had to fight to be recognised in the male dominated coaching world, let alone walking into the Aladdin’s cave of designer dresses laid on for her at Wimbledon, had us captivated!

“I am a massive believer in the power of women coming together for a common cause,” Judy revealed.

Although best known as the fiercely passionate “momager” to Andy and Jamie, with 64 national titles and a long career in coaching, Judy is a force to be reckoned with in her own right.

She became the Scottish National Coach in 1995, the same year that she became the first woman to pass the Lawn Tennis Association Performance Coach Award.

In 2011 Judy was appointed Captain of the British Fed Cup Team and used this role to grow the profile and numbers in women’s tennis across players and coaches.

Judy has developed several tennis initiatives including; Miss-Hits, a starter programme for girls age 5 to 8, Tennis on the Road, which takes tennis into remote and deprived parts of Scotland, and, most recently, She Rallies, a programme with the LTA, to encourage more women and girls into tennis across the UK.

Bubbles and Book Signing at the Bluebird

Guests were greeted with a glass of bubbly on arrival before having the chance to purchase the latest copy of Judy Murray’s new memoir: ‘Knowing The Score’ and a book signing.

Lunch was a three-course delight with ceviche salmon for starters, followed by grilled sea bream for the main course, topped with a delicious coconut sorbet for dessert.

After a lunch, the raffle was drawn and three lucky guest won from our prizes – a signed Head Tennis racket, £100 voucher for Blush & Blow and a Champagne Dinner for Two at the Bluebird.
