Wellbeing of Women respond to Department for Health and Social Care announcement on the introduction of menopause into over 40s health checks

It's official - over-40 NHS health checks in England will now include menopause screening. This means that women will be asked menopause questions in their health checks, with the aim of helping them understand their symptoms and know when to seek support.

Janet Lindsay, Chief Executive at Wellbeing of Women, said:

“Despite growing awareness of menopause in recent years, stigma and shame around women’s health persist. We welcome the plan to include menopause questions in over-40 health checks and hope this will help more women understand their symptoms and seek support. Too many still do not reach out for help — often because they don’t recognise what they’re experiencing as menopause or are unaware of the support available.,

However, not all women access these health checks. Women and people from marginalised communities are less likely to know about or attend these appointments, and progress on menopause support cannot leave them behind. Healthcare professionals must work with grassroots organisations embedded in these communities to ensure that those facing additional barriers receive the tailored care they need.”
