Donate to help women like Clare
Around 4,600 women are diagnosed with cervical or vulval cancer every year in the UK. Treatment usually involves surgery to remove a tumour, but cancerous cells can be left behind. In more than 4 in 10 cases, the cancer returns.
Three women die from cervical or vulval cancer each day in the UK.
Wellbeing of Women researchers are developing a new technique to diagnose cervical and vulval cancers faster and more accurately, as well as improving their surgical treatment by ensuring all cancerous tissue is removed, reducing the likelihood of the cancer returning, and saving lives.
Before she was diagnosed, Clare had never heard of the word vulva, let alone of the condition vulval cancer
“I first noticed a tear which I thought would heal by itself, but it changed into an ulcer and doubled in size. The GP said it was herpes, which took me by surprise, and my reaction prompted the doctor to look again. On her second look she said, ‘it could be something called vulval cancer’. She was right.
I was convinced it would be terminal, and I started to plan my funeral. The hardest part was telling my children."
