Let’s Talk Periods: Fibroids & Adenomyosis-image

The first webinar in our 2022 ‘Let’s Talk Periods’ series will be exploring two common conditions that can cause heavy and painful periods: fibroids, non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb, and adenomyosis, a condition in which the lining of the womb is found deep in the muscle of the uterus.

Although one in three women will develop fibroids at some point in their life, and adenomyosis affects as many as one in 10 women of reproductive age, these conditions remain hard to diagnose and it can take a long time for women to get answers.

So how do we diagnose these conditions and what can be done to improve symptoms?

Our Chair Prof Dame Lesley Regan will be speaking to Dr Varsha Jain, a Wellbeing of Women Research Training Fellow at the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh, who is researching why women suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding due to conditions such as fibroids and adenomyosis.

Our experts will cover:

• What are fibroids and adenomyosis?

• What are the symptoms?

• How are these conditions diagnosed?

• How can fertility be affected?

• What are the treatment options available?
