Sandwich carers: understanding and supporting them in the workplace-image

A sandwich carer provides unpaid support to both dependent children and older relatives, often while managing work and personal responsibilities. Spanning ages from late teens to mid‑60s, they are one of the largest but least recognised groups of carers in the UK. Many don’t identify as carers, despite facing significant emotional, practical and financial pressures.

Research highlights the impact: 88% report burnout, 75% feel guilty taking time for themselves, 65% say they’ve lost a sense of identity, 39% report declining mental health and 27% feel constantly exhausted. Caring is also gendered, with women more likely to take on these roles.

This webinar is aimed at all staff who want to learn how to recognise carers, understand how caring affects work, and implement practical support such as flexible working and compassionate conversations. It also covers ways carers can protect their wellbeing and seek support.
